Communication has come a long way since the days when we would paint mammoths on cave walls. From video calls with people from anywhere in the world, to instantly messaging your friends the latest cool emojis, no matter where you are, we communicate more freely now than ever before. And when it comes to mobile devices, texting is by far the most popular form of communication. If you need proof of that, look no further than the increasing number of instant messaging apps on the Google Play store, of the over 60,000 communication apps.
With texting growing in popularity more and more every year, emojis and emoji stickers have become almost a necessity, being not just fun to use in almost any conversation, but also making it easier for us to express emotions than through texts. Whether you’re using Redraw Keyboard’s amazing emojis, or using the sticker app feature, there’s no shortage of fun pictograms to choose from. But with great emoji skills comes great responsibility, and there are times when using cool emojis may not be appropriate. Yes, there is a time and place for emojis, for example:
Are you using emojis in the wrong situation?
Online conversations aren’t limited just to your closest friends. They can now extend passed friendships, as more and more companies use instant messaging apps as a means of communicating between employees. As convenient as that is, it also means there are more chances of inadvertently using emojis in the wrong situation. So, needless to say, you need to be pretty careful when using emojis in a work-related conversation.
Likewise, if you’re having a serious conversation with a friend, be it because they need some life advice, or a shoulder to lean on, over-using your favorite animated emoji may give off the impression that you don’t care about their struggles. And that’s never a good thing.
…or with the wrong people?
It’s tempting to sprinkle cool emojis in a conversation like you would sprinkle salt on your food. While there’s nothing wrong with replacing every word in a sentence with an emoji when you text your BFF, others, who may not be as familiar with your style of texting, might not be so quick to get what you’re trying to say.
Similar to inside jokes, emojis can be seen as being just a tad too personal when chatting with someone you don’t know all that well. Over-using those cute yellow faces with work colleagues before they get a chance to know you is also a big no-no, as you could come across as someone who doesn’t take things seriously enough.
Disregarding how these cool emojis might look to other people
It’s not a secret anymore that emojis can look different on different operating systems. While these differences may not be that great most times, there can be situations in which the message you’re trying to convey and the one your chatting partner receives could be completely different. One example of this is the ‘grimacing’ emoticon:
There are many others that look different depending on your preferred operating system. Now that’s no reason to abandon all these cool emojis and forget about using them. But rather make sure you stay away from the ones that might send a message that is miles away from what you intended.
We can all agree that fun sticker design and cool emojis is pretty much essential to our texting game! Just remember these guidelines and you’ll won’t have to worry about ever being misunderstood.
